Narratives of Terror and Disappearance
7. October 2015
Final Conference of the ERC project
The ERC-funded project “Narratives of Terror and Disappearance. Fantastic Dimensions of Argentina‘s Collective Memory since the Military Dictatorship” was active between April 2010 and March 2015.
The final conference gathers the core team and associated researchers to present and discuss the results of the individual and collective projects and to draw the lines for future research.
The research project combined literary studies with political science and social anthropology to examine the different ways in which the figure of the disappeared, the forcefully abducted victims of the military dictatorship, shaped the Argentinean collective memory. Particular attention was paid to the ways in which the fantastic, haunting, and spectrality characterize the narratives of terror and, moreover, whether the fantastic as a mode of cultural communication, tradition, and art disseminates rather than counteracts the experience of horror.
